PCOS Syndrome Defined
Also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, the polycystic ovarian syndrome is a hormonal deficiency that causes a lot of women to have different symptoms. It is an endocrine disorder affecting more or less 5% of women. It happens to all reaces and nationalities, and PCOS syndrome is the most leading cause of infertility and widespread hormonal disorder for women in childbearing age.
The symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome are obesity, anovulation which eventually will lead to irregular menstruation, acne, and excessive amounts or effects of androgenic or masculinizing hormones. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary from woman to woman. PCOS syndrome causes are quite unknown except for obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance associated with PCOS syndrome.
Other symptoms are weight gain, skin discoloration, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, unsual hair growth and distribution and even dandruff. Many of these symptoms can be absent to those women who have PCOS but they will always have irregularities in their menstruation or don’t have it at all.Women who don’t experience regular ovulation don’t produce egg cells each month and that often leads to irregular menstruation.
Although there’s no established fact of PCOS, women who suffer from it either have a mother or sister who has PCOS but still it’s not considered hereditary.More often, women with PCOS have small cysts found in their ovaries, that’s why it is called polycystic ovarian syndrome. There are comparable number of cysts that grow in women who have not suffered from PCOS. Thus, these cysts themselves would not be the cause of this predicament.Usually the blood sugar control system in women breaks down for those women sufering from PCOS; hence most researchers believe that these are caused by PCOS development. The ovaries of women who suffer from PCOS are known to produce an excess of male hormones called androgen.Too much production of male hormones may be a result of irregular insulin production.
